First Fridays @ The Carle

Taking a cue from the Museum's popular Member PJ parties, which have been cited by families as the perfect bedtime transition for little ones, First Fridays @ The Carle invites all visitors to head to the Museum after school/work, grab a quick and casual bite to eat (pizza!) in the Museum's Café, enjoy a Storytime in the Reading Library, drop by the Galleries, take in a short film in the Auditorium, and create a masterpiece in the Art Studio . . . all before bedtime!

The program runs from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on the first Friday of each month.

From Story to Screen - Kickoff Northampton’s KidsBestFest 2007 with the Museum’s screening of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder and directed by Mel Stuart. Based on the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory written by Roald Dahl in 1964 and illustrated by Quentin Blake (1995, 1998, 2001), Charlie can't believe his luck when he finds a golden ticket and wins the trip of a lifetime around the famous factory. Might there be a golden ticket waiting for you?

Be sure to visit the Gallery and Art Studio following the film to enjoy the magic of Quentin Blake’s drawings and create some of your own.

Enjoy the Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Children’s Theater adaptation of How Tom Beat Captain Najork and His Hired Sportsmen, written by Russell Hoban and illustrated by Quentin Blake. This tale tells of Tom, a boy who spends his time fooling around. His Aunt Fidget Wonkham-Strong feels Tom does a little too much fooling around, so she calls upon the fearsome Captain Najork and his hired sportsmen to teach Tom a lesson.

Hear one of the great American watercolorists of the twentieth century share the story behind his first picture book. From his interest in the Savoy Ballroom to his meeting with Bebe Moore Campbell, Yarde will talk about the process of creating this book and its vibrant watercolor illustrations. Book signing to follow.

This series is recommended for adults and for children of kindergarten age and older.

Castle Hill Theatre Presents Rumpelstiltskin. An original adaptation of the fairy-tale classic Rumpelstiltskin, the story of a poor miller who brags his daughter Aurelia can spin straw into gold. Hearing this, the King demands her to do it. Watch Aurelia's hilarious attempts to spin straw into gold until she is helped by a strange visitor, who extracts from her a terrible promise. Full of magic, laughter and mystery, this is a play you and your children won't want to miss!

This national campaign encourages hundreds of thousands of children and adults to read the same book, The Story of Ferdinand, on the same day. The goal is to raise public awareness and funds to engage at-risk children from low-income communities and improve their school preparedness.

If you are unable to join us on site for the event, you may purchase a copy of the book by visiting our Museum Shop, or borrow from your local library, and join us as a virtual participant and Museum affiliate.

This is event will be held at the University Club, New York City. The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2nd Annual Carle Honors, a unique constellation of awards designed to recognize four distinct forms of creative vision and long-term dedication to the art of the picture book and its vital role in supporting art appreciation, early literacy, and critical thinking. This year’s Carle Honors recipients include Ashley Bryan – Artist, Martin and Lillie Pope of the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation – Angel, Margaret McElderry – Mentor, and Twila Liggett of Reading Rainbow – Bridge. Each has had a tremendous impact on enriching the field of children’s illustrated literature and expanding audience and support for the same.
